    porting and polishing

Ive heard many people say, mostly car enthusiast that porting and polishing works like a charm and its the best thing to do for maximum perfermance. i once read in a superchevy mag. that the porting part works but not the polishing part so i asked the machinist where i worked and he agreed. so i want more opinions or the truth to this myth.

    Re: porting and polishing

I have been porting cylinder heads for 37 years. I have ran ported cylinder heads on most of my personal vehicles. You will notice a performance gain and possiblly an increase in gas mileage.

My last vehichle with ported cylinder heads was a 1997 GMC pickup with a 4.3L V6. No aftermarket add-ons, just ported cylinder heads with multi-angle valve job. There was an increase in mid range and highway speed power. Low end power was good also.

Polishing to a mirror finish was a big thing twenty years ago. I use a form of polishing to fine tune a port using coarse grit shop roll abrasives. Some of the newer fuel injection cars like the Chevrolet LS engine may benefit from fine finish polishing due to the speed of the air flowing thru the intake port.

I think you are right my builder spends a lot of time on porting and just smooths out the rough spots as far as polishing he also says that polishing if it helps is on the exhaust side to smooth on the intake causes the fuel to "stick" to the walls and make droplets I don"t know but listining to him sold me on my last set of heads and intake (stroked 427 FE) and the torque curve is unreal close to 700ft.lbs at 2500 rpm at the crank so something helped  Tony  Pony Express

porting and polishing cylinder heads contrributes to the increase of the performance of the car. i know a person who did this to his gmc truck. the result was worth it because the task was quite difficult.
